Stabat Mater

Instrumentationfl ( picc, afl), ob, ca, cl, bcl, bsn, cbsn, 4 hn, 4 perc (no timp), chorus, kbd (hpscd, clst), cello section I (4-6), cello section II (4-6), double bass (4-6)
Lengthc. 30 min.
DifficultyMedium to difficult
CommentsThe traditional Latin text is augmented by words of Palestinian and Israeli mothers whose children have been killed in the conflict, so the entire work is a cantata of compassion, suitable for concerts for peace, etc. The musical/artistic journey proceeds from the deepest grief to a sense of light. It would pair well with a familiar choral/orchestral work such as the Fauré or Duruflé Requiem, Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, other settings of the Stabat Mater, etc.
